Hybrid Cars
Thursday, July 31, 2003
Right now people are too used to their gas-guzzling internal-combustion or diesel cars to make hydrogen fuel-cell-, elecric-, or solar-powered cars realistic today. Research in new technologies is important, but more money should be invested into hybrids.
The EPA, DOE, DOT or whoever actually has the right to do so should tax fuel-inneficient cars such as SUVs to
- decrease the appeal of producing and buying such cars, and
- make the price of hybrid cars comparable to standard cars.
Hybrid cars are not much of a lifestyle change, since they never have to be charged like traditional electric cars and are filled up at the pump just as easily as normal cars.
References: Hybrids cost substantially more than their gasoline-only counterparts.

Wikipedia is an enormous encyclopedia that can freely be view and edited by its users. It is constantly being improved and is growing rapidly.
Since Encyclopedia Britannica stopped showing their work gratis online, Wikipedia is now one of the few good alternatives to Google when you need precise unbiased articles as opposed to the unpredictableness of most personal websites or commercial sites listed on Google that provide no useful information.
Go ahead and browse the surprisingly comprehensive reference, and don't be afraid to add your own knowledge.
Aberrant
Saturday, July 26, 2003
There was no Aberrant today or yesterday, which means I will play tomorrow and then not get enough sleep since I have work on Monday. Most of the people I play with are going away to college at the end of August, so I have to try to get some new people.
Stuttering
Saturday, July 26, 2003
When stutterers stutter on a word that starts with the letter Q, do they say kw-kw-kw-kw or k-k-k-k-k?
Note that the answer is obvious to me, but it's still a good question.
Jenga Jam

I wrote (and played) the Jenga Jam.
Fuck Politics
Wednesday, July 23, 2003
Some asshole shot a “political opponent” in New York's city hall today (NY Times report). What gives somebody the urge to kill just to gain a government position? R.I.P. James E. Davis.
Two more American soldiers were killed in Iraq today as the nonexistent war rages on.
Work II: The Second Day
Wednesday, July 23, 2003
Work was alright; it was less tiring than yesterday. All I did today was data entry using a program that couldn't sort a list people's names so it was a real pain in the ass and took the entire day to do. I was revitalized by one of my semi-daily beach outings.
Work
Tuesday, July 22, 2003
I started working today and am thoroughly exhasted. I just do generic office drone work such as making copies and data entry. I'll probably work for three or four weeks, which should buy me a nice amp and I'll have plenty left over for whatever I may want (within a certain range.)
Booyah!
Monday, July 21, 2003
Yesterday I saw Henry V in Central Park. Today I found out that I got a 4 on my WHAP exam, which most colleges accept as credit. I just finished my custom Aberrant character sheet.

Unreal Tournament

Unreal Tournament is loads of fun. I suck a lot, but if somebody wants to play me I may join them.
Golf Movies
Wednesday, July 16, 2003
Golf movies...is there a worse genre? The plot synopsis of any golf movie is:
- Boy starts to play golf.
- Boy learns of legendary player and starts to play better using the legend as inspiration.
- Boy learns location of legend and searches for him.
- Boy finds legend, but the legend “doesn't play that game any more.”
- Boy and legend learn life lessons from each other.
- Legend dies.
- Boy enters a tournament and just before losing he remembers that winning isn't important and goes on to win.
That's pretty much the general rule of those films. I guess they're not really the worst, but they are pretty bad. The only thing more predictable is Harry Potter, which happens to kick ass.
Now He's Really Off His Rocker
Wednesday, July 16, 2003
Bush: “God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them.”
Apparently God is in on this too.

Bush Should Resign
Wednesday, July 16, 2003
For those of you that haven't yet read the cover articles of Time magazine for July 21, 2003, I strongly urge you to do so. If you
- supported the war on Iraq, your eyes will be opened to the truth.
- opposed the war you will get some media support. Warning: this may outrage you and make you feel like you should have done something.
So far I've mostly been blaming Bush, but he is just the figurehead of all this bullshit. I trust very few people in the executive branch right now. I used to think that we should just bear with this regime until 2004, but now I really believe that Bush's time is up. There are others who were just as bad as—if not worse than—Bush himself, but the president is supposed to be (pardon the naïveness) a model citizen.
Colin Powell is the only one who is trustworthy. For example, when addressing the UN he did not cite the bogus intelligence report about Saddam Hussein's attempted procurement of uranium from Niger claiming that it was not credible enough.
The propaganda worked on the American public for quite a while. The view elsewhere in the world is quite different—on my trip to Italy this Spring there was a Pace (Peace) flag hanging from every other window or balcony. Americans have reason to crave violence—after September 11th pretty much every decent person in the United States was angry, but how long can we let our government take advantage of our woe?
They say the war is over, but people are still dying.
Honda FCX
Tuesday, July 15, 2003
The Honda FCX is the first hydrogen fuel cell-powered car to become road legal in the United States. About five were sold so far. Honda has long been the most environmentally sound automaker. There are just a few problems:
- You can't go fill up a tank of pure hydrogen anywhere. This problem can be overcome. You used to not be able to go fill up a tank of gasoline.
- We no longer use zeppelins because hydrogen is explosive. Is the hydrogen used in cars somehow safer?
There are ways to solve both problems of obtaining and of storing hydrogen, but the means are more difficult and less efficient than using pure hydrogen.
Despite problems, this is definitely a positive step.
SBEmail 80?
Tuesday, July 15, 2003
I sent an email to Strong Bad (strongbad@homestarrunner.com) which I think would make a good SBEmail 80. Just so there won't be any doubt about my writing it (and to give you a possible sneak preview) I am posting my message now.
Hey Mr. Bad,
You used to answer emails every Monday on the Monday. Now it's like every-Monday-except-last-Monday-on-the-Monday. Did you take a sabbatical or something?
Crapfully yous,

GM Hy-Wire
Monday, July 14, 2003
GM unveiled a concept car known as Hy-Wire. It will be powered by Hydrogen fuel cells (Hy-) and will be wire-controlled, rather than by mechanical links (-Wire). The motor and everything else that runs the car is located in an 11" (28 cm) area underneath the body, which can thus be replacable and also allows for a much more ergonomic car design.
Learning During the Summer

Yesterday I accidentally figured out how to play Aerials by System of a Down, or at least a good portion of it. Today I decided to learn a bit of Python, just because it's so incredibly simple.

Re: Bullshit Exposed
Friday, July 11, 2003
Note: this post augments the previous post.
Question of the Week: Had Bush not said those few words in his State of the Union address, would Congress have made a different decision?
Bush's State of the Union Address:
. . . The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed in the 1990s that Saddam Hussein had an advanced nuclear weapons development program, had a design for a nuclear weapon and was working on five different methods of enriching uranium for a bomb. The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa. Our intelligence sources tell us that he has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production. Saddam Hussein has not credibly explained these activities. He clearly has much to hide. . . .
Was that the clinching paragraph? No one will ever know if the war could have been avoided—the speech is irreversible.
If only Quantum Leap were real...
Bullshit Exposed
Friday, July 11, 2003
George W. Bush, as well as the CIA, turned out to have lied about Iraq's attempt to acquire nuclear weapons from Niger. Read more about what the people who didn't trust the propaganda believed for months:
- The BBC World Service – CIA takes blame for Iraq claims
- CIA Press Release
- Google News Search – CNN article and related stories

For those of you who listened to the Homestar Runner interview from yesterday's post, you know that according to the creators there was no breakup between Homestar and Marzipan, however Marzipan's comments at Homestar's Carve-nival prove otherwise.
